The Deming Series, Point Two

embrace the new

Welcome to my series. If you're new, I'm posting one write up about Deming's 14 points every day for as many days. If you'd like to start at the beginning, jump over to the Where to Start main page and find the first one. If you're down to start now, keep reading. I hope to provide you with something useful.

Point Two: Adopting the New Philosophy

Jump into the idea of excellent quality, low levels of waste, high efficiency, and engaged employees. To effect change and operate in the market where high quality is assumed requires internal transformation. This transformation has to be at the highest levels of your business. Point one was about knowing your purpose, point two is focused on using your purpose as a leader to improve your organization.

There's that word again; leadership. Everything "new" is doomed to failure without leadership. So all the purpose and vision work you've done and the decisions about improvement come down to your ability to lead.

Point Two is all about leadership. Change is never a success without leadership. You cannot delegate this, you cannot reassign it. You must own change. Tie the new philosophy with the purpose you (should) have already refined. Refuel your passion to serve your customers with vision. Deming's implication throughout the language in point two is to inform leadership of their duty.

Leadership & Start. Somewhere.

First we find purpose (see point one). Then we identify how your systems work and where to put solutions. Next is how. Where and how are integral to point two. Each one is leadership building intentions. They are when the new philosophy is written down.

One of the inclusions of Start. Somewhere. is a culture framework. The elements in the framework are there to assist leadership with how and where to leverage new ideas. Culture will be the tool you, as leaders, affect change to the organization. If you take the time to find where to fix problems and how to do it...you had better make sure you can build these corrections into your culture.

I have likely said this too much here already. If leadership isn't dedicated to building the right culture, it will fail. There has to be 100% commitment. No exceptions. No passing the buck down the chain.
